Hey, Can I Ask You Something: Competing
by tricia
There is a special physical sensation prior to any competition. From a very young age I can still remember it bubbling up in the pit of my stomach. In sports they refer to this feeling as “butterflies” to describe the mild tension in your core before a big challenge or test. I treasure this feeling because it gives me a little extra boost in competition. It gives me one more gear to focus a little bit harder, lift a little bit heavier, and move at a faster pace. Once the clock counts down 3-2-1…GO, the feeling dissipates and all that is left is the task at hand and giving the workout 100% effort.
This feeling that a competition gives us is invaluable because it reminds us what we are capable of. It is a true measure of human capacity to do work. Big PRs happen in competition, everyone goes just that much faster and achieves things they never thought they could do. But maybe the best part about CrossFit competitions in particular is that they create a priceless experience.
In any given competition you will:
Meet new and interesting CrossFitters from different gyms- We all have a passion for fitness so making new friends isn’t hard.
Push yourself way harder than you thought you ever could- (as previously described) which leaves you with a gigantic feeling of accomplishment afterwards.
Expose your weaknesses. This may be the best part about comps. You leave with a good understanding of what you did well and what you struggled with. Armed with that knowledge you will know what you need to work on in training!
Face adversity- You will get no-repped at some point. Its how you respond to it that matters. Learning to let go of what you can’t control is a huge part of having a healthy mindset.
Have a Blast- Who doesn’t want an excuse to work out all evening and hang out with friends?
So if you are new to competition, the best thing you could do would be to sign up for one. Forget about the what-ifs and fears that naturally arise out of a challenge. I promise you will come out of the event a better athlete.
So go sign up, and feel those butterflies. They are the start of something new and exciting to pursue.
