We perform the CrossFit games Open every year rolling with whatever CFHQ and Dave Castro throw at us. Each year is new and exciting and different. We encourage all members to sign up including listing Birdtown CrossFit as your Affiliate and Team. That might be cool and all, but maybe we need to go back a step…
What is the CrossFit Open?
The Open is comprised of five’ish workouts over five weeks, and it starts with 18.1 coming at us this week. Open workouts are identified by their year and the order in which they appear. The workouts will be released every Thursday during the five weeks of the Open, and you can watch the live announcement of the workout that will be streamed on the CrossFit Games website.
The announcement will take place at a different location each week, and two athletes (or more) will perform the workout live. After the workout is released, any athlete who has registered for the Open will have until 5 p.m. PT on the following Monday to submit their best score online.
Basically, competitive exercisers all over the world participate in these CFHQ defined workouts. There are RX and Scaled divisions and for these workouts, we choose from one of the available options. We know as much of what is coming as you do. Rules of the game: expect the unexpected.
Here’s a recap of the what the next five weeks will look like and a reminder on rules at BTCF:
Order of Events
- Thursday Evening 8:00pm – Open Announcement by CFHQ & Watch Party at BTCF
- Friday CF WOD All Day – whatever HQ throws out at us, that’s what we’ll be doing! ALL BTCF athletes perform the workout – whether you’re registered for The Open or not – this is your Workout of the Day.
- Sunday Open Gym – organized heats performing the Open Workouts.
- Monday Evening 8:00pm – Score Submission deadline
- Wednesday Evening 8:00pm – BTCF validation deadline
Bonus notes for Fridays and Sundays:
We try and run these CF WOD classes within our typical hour and include heats with judges for all. If we are assigned something like an 18min AMRAP, we do the best we can, but please have some flexibility as we know as much as you do as far as what’s in store.
Friday nights during the 6:30pm CF WOD it usually has a little more of a hangout vibe then a formal, run by the minute class.
For Sunday Open Gyms, if you’re planning on doing the workout, you should also expect to judge another heat. We also request you show up at a decent time. Rolling in at 11:55am is not the greatest for helping us plan our mornings.
For any of these, if you want to bring a guest to watch you workout, sweet! We’re open to it.
The Open brings a ton of energy in the gym and we love it. But the Open still follows…
Our Everyday Rules:
1) DBD.
2) Regularly scheduled program takes precedence over all other else.
We’re throwing in another rule this year, but also pairing it with something to look forward to:
3) Please don’t bring donuts to every Open Gym for the next five weeks (this is a real request). We are a gym. We are all for working on our fitness and reaping the benefits of what that has to offer. If you can hold off on covering the desk in donuts every week this year, we’ll spring for a donut feast during / after Open Gym of Week 5 (Sunday, March 25th).
Offering the Open workouts on Friday and Sunday allows ample opportunity to complete the requirements within the standard time frame allowed by CFHQ. Additional open workouts are only scheduled on an individual basis for extenuating circumstances. Examples: I was at an out of town funeral, may I do the workout Monday night? Yes. I want to do it a third time. No.

A note for drop-ins, you are more than welcome at Birdtown CrossFit! In lieu of our typical $20 class fee, we accept gifts to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Cash, check (to LLS), or credit card donations are welcome. Drop-ins are expected to follow all the same lovely rules that apply to our members listed above.
Happy 2018 Open Season!
2017 Open: Javier finishing 17.5 with the support of the rest of his class!
